Firm Appeals Citations in Fatal Roof Collapse
An Orange County demolition company is appealing five civil citations from the California Occupational Health and Safety Administration in connection with a June 9 roof collapse in Torrance that killed one worker and injured five others.
In its appeal, Radco said it was unaware that workers were at the demolition site. It said they were employees of a subcontractor who entered the site by breaking a lock to salvage plywood and electrical materials for “their own financial gain.”
Cal/OSHA issued the citations last month against Placentia-based Radco Concrete, Sawing & Breaking Inc., saying it found 18 violations of state occupational safety and health standards. The citations carry potential fines totaling $9,680.
The accident at the former National Lumber & Supply store killed Miguel Arzate of Los Angeles. He and five other workers crashed through the roof and fell 20 to 25 feet to a concrete floor.
