Plane Lands Safely Despite Gear Problem
SANTA ANA — A StatesWest commuter plane from John Wayne Airport circled Los Angeles for 90 minutes Wednesday morning after a cockpit emergency light indicated that its landing gear was not working.
The small plane, carrying seven passengers, landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport at 10:37 a.m., Federal Aviation Administration official Art Morriston said.
Matt Goodwin, pilot for States-West Flight 3938, had reported an emergency to FAA officials at 7:50 a.m., authorities said.
“They didn’t know they could land,” Morriston said. The warning light indicated that “they still had an unsafe indication,” he said, when actually “the landing gear was down but they didn’t know it was locked into position.” He said the plane’s emergency light stayed on until the Beechcraft 1900C landed.
