PRO FOOTBALL : DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Doctor Repeats: Jackson Won’t Play

A medical expert who examined Bo Jackson in March and determined that he would never play football again said his opinion regarding Jackson’s hip injury has not changed in the last three months.

The doctor, who asked that his name not be used, doubted seriously whether the running back could return to the Raiders this season. “If I was a betting man, I’d bet everything against (Jackson) coming back,” he said Wednesday.

The doctor said he last reviewed Jackson’s medical records about a month ago and saw little improvement in the hip condition known as avascular necrosis. The same doctor said in March that Jackson had only an outside chance of playing baseball again and certainly would never play football.

Interest in Jackson’s future arose again this week when he appeared in a Chicago White Sox uniform and participated in light workouts. Jackson said he hopes to return to baseball this season.

Raider Coach Art Shell said Jackson told him before last April’s NFL draft that if he was able to return to baseball, he would also play football.

Jackson has one year remaining on his contract with the Raiders. He was injured last January during the Raiders’ playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Quarterback Jay Schroeder was held out of Tuesday’s afternoon practice because of a fever, which allowed rookie Todd Marinovich more work. Shell said Schroeder’s illness is not serious.

Punter Jeff Gossett is expected to report to camp as soon as his wife delivers her baby, Shell said. Gossett’s wife reportedly is due at any moment.

Gossett’s arrival would leave four unsigned veterans--defensive tackle Bob Golic, center Don Mosebar, defensive end Scott Davis and tackle Bruce Wilkerson.

Shell said he has still not heard from reserve defensive end Mike Wise, who left camp earlier this week.
