U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL LOS ANGELES 1991 : NOTEBOOK
Sharon Poulin was excited about the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival.
It was to be the first opportunity for the Fairfield, Me., mother of four to compete in a championship equestrian event with her husband, Michael.
But instead of sharing the victors’ podium as she had hoped, Sharon Poulin found herself out of the competition and in a familiar role--mothering.
This time it was a sick horse.
Her mount, a 13-year-old bay gelding named Monti, developed serious colic after arriving at the festival equestrian site.
The malady struck three hours before they were to compete in the team dressage event.
Poulin, officially scratched, watched the team event Monday and again as her husband won the individual dressage event Tuesday to accompany his 1989 gold medal and 1990 silver medal for the same festival event.
