The Way He Saw It, Louis Was Coasting

I very much enjoyed Earl Gustkey’s June 18 article about the first Joe Louis-Billy Conn fight. I saw it. While my recollection can’t compete for accuracy with his viewing it at leisure on film, I would like to note a difference in our perceptions.

Briefly, I thought Louis carried Conn for at least the first 11 rounds. The word “coasting” comes to mind.

There was a small amount of comment in the press later to the effect that because of the great difference in size, Louis just didn’t take Conn too seriously.

Perhaps Mr. Gustkey will run those first rounds again with the above in mind.
