Jeffrey Rallies From 1st-Set Loss to Win Berth in Volvo Tournament Semifinals

Mark Jeffrey of Woodland Hills overcame a first-set loss to beat Ignacio Martinez of San Ysidro, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the third round of the Volvo tennis tournament Friday at The Racquet Centre in Studio City.

Jeffrey, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, will play No. 2-seeded Willy Quest in a semifinal today. Sean Brawley of Pacific Palisades, who upset No. 1-seeded Paul Hubbard, 7-6, 7-6, will face Chris Toomey in the other semifinal.

The tournament concludes Sunday.

A triathlon will be held at Oxnard State Beach Park starting at 7 a.m. Sunday.

The triathlon will consist of a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 20-kilometer run. The top 10 finishers in each age group will qualify for the Triathlon World Cup in Las Vegas on Sept. 21.

Eric Forkel of Chatsworth will be the third-seeded player in today’s stepladder finals of the $130,000 Wichita Open bowling tournament in Wichita, Kan.

Forkel won seven of eight games Thursday en route to the fourth-round lead. His best finish this year was third at Seattle.

Chris Warren of Dallas moved into the top spot for the finals by winning seven of eight games Friday.

A series of weekly sports camps will continue at Cal State Northridge on Monday.

Camps in soccer, softball, tennis, and baseball will run from Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Future camps will be held in girls’ volleyball, from July 29-Aug. 2, and in girls’ basketball and boys’ volleyball, from Aug. 5-9.
