THOUSAND OAKS : Taxi Hours Adjusted for Seniors, Disabled

The Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday night decided to adjust operating hours for a subsidized taxi service to allow seniors and handicapped people to commute to work.

The council voted unanimously to adjust shifts for two of five taxis that normally operate between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Instead, the shifts will start at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m.

The decision was in response to increased demand from seniors and handicapped people who regularly use the service. Taxi ridership has jumped since the city decided in 1987 to subsidize fares through a contract with the Thousand Oaks Cab Co., officials said.

Last year, officials logged 55,000 rides by seniors and disabled people. That figure is expected to grow to 58,000 by the end of 1991.

Citing budget constraints, the council last month delayed a proposal to expand the hours for all five taxis by four hours each day. In that proposal, the service would have operated from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
