CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Gutierrez Named to Civil Rights Post

Gov. Pete Wilson on Friday appointed Nancy Gutierrez of Los Angeles as the new director of the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing. A Republican, Gutierrez, 50, currently is a private human resources consultant. The department administers the state’s civil rights laws and is charged with protecting Californians against unlawful discrimination based on sex, age, race, religion, national origin, physical handicap, marital status or cancer-related medical conditions. The job pays $83,868 annually and requires Senate confirmation.
