Last U.S. Troops to Leave Korea Border
WASHINGTON — The last American combat troops guarding the border between the two Koreas will turn over their posts to South Korean soldiers in October, the Pentagon said.
The U.S. pullback from two patrol positions near the truce village of Panmunjom will mean that, for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953, no American forces will be at guard posts along the 150-mile-long Demilitarized Zone, Col. Miguel Monteverde, a Pentagon spokesman, said Thursday.
South Korean military officials had said Wednesday that a redeployment of American troops in the Demilitarized Zone would be completed by 1992. Monteverde said the withdrawal from the guard posts will be finished in October.
