BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Sax Says He Is Happy in Pinstripes
Although the Yankees reportedly are willing to trade second baseman Steve Sax to make room for rookie Pat Kelly, Sax said that he does not want to leave. He called a rumor that he was so sure that he would be traded to the Angels that he went house hunting during the Yankees’ recent visit to Anaheim “not even close.” Sax signed a contract extension last season that will pay him $12.4 million over four years beginning in 1992.
“I just sold my house in Southern California and built a new home in Northern California. I got out of Southern California for good,” he said. “I certainly am not planning (on playing for the Angels), although it’s up to the front office, of course.”
Right-hander Mike Witt, whom the Angels traded to the Yankees for Dave Winfield last May, underwent surgery to rebuild the ulnar collateral nerve in his pitching elbow and is expected to be idled for a year.
