OXNARD : School Bus Firm Seeks to Raise Rates
A school bus company that transports elementary students asked for a 10.2% rate increase after the Oxnard Elementary School District cut nine bus routes to save money.
A Durham Transportation official told the school board Wednesday that the company stands to lose 35% of its revenue because the district pared bus routes from 27 to 18. The district trimmed $2.75 million from its 1991-92 budget. Officials estimate the district will save $450,000 by cutting the nine bus routes and sending more children to neighborhood schools.
Board President Charles R. Johnson said he would be “hard put to vote for any increase on anything that will increase our debt.”
The district’s contract with Durham provides for a yearly rate increase of 0.08%, which the company said is too low.
The bus company also asked that the district waive a $12,000 performance bond or reduce the rent that it is paying on the facility where the buses are housed.
