Pesticide Spill in Sacramento River

In response to “Southern Pacific: Asleep at the Switch,” editorial, July 18:

The Times seems to be playing the blaming game. Southern Pacific Railroad might have been negligent, the regulators might have been relaxed, but the fact remains that our society is too dependent on these deadly chemicals.

Had it not been for our demands, SPR would not have been transporting the chemicals. Unless and until we as a society learn to live with the environment and not depend on environmentally harmful chemicals, disasters like this (or Exxon Valdez) or worse will continue to happen.

It is time that we look at the root cause of the problems, not just the symptoms.
