Reacting to a Pregnant Pose in Vanity Fair
I read your article regarding Demi Moore posing nude on the cover of Vanity Fair while pregnant (“Embracing Motherhood,” July 15). I could not believe that in the year 1991 this would be a controversial issue.
One of the most disturbing things is the opinion of one woman who stated, “It’s tacky . . . to display your swollen stomach like that--and why would people want to look at it?” One of the most beautiful things women can do is create life. Why wouldn’t a woman want to show off her body while there is a life growing inside of it?
This incident is reminiscent of one a couple of years ago when a hostess at a Beverly Hills restaurant asked a woman who was breast-feeding her baby to do it in the bathroom. Don’t people see that this is one of the most exceptional things women can do? Not only can we create a life, but we can make food to feed it.
People are dying of AIDS in this country; people are living on the streets in this country; people don’t have enough food to feed their kids in this country; children are not getting a decent education in this country. And Demi Moore posing nude while pregnant is “controversial.”
There is something seriously wrong with the people of this country.
