PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Warren Returns to Saints’ Camp
Defensive lineman Frank Warren of the New Orleans Saints went to training camp saying he hopes the hardest part was undergoing treatment for drug abuse that cost him a year in the NFL.
“I could sit here and tell you I won’t have that trouble again,” he said. “You’re never supposed to say never.”
But losing a year of football and the $350,000 salary he would have received for 1990, then working for $7.50 an hour as a laborer for an electrical contractor brought him close to saying “never.”
Warren had 15 1/2 sacks for the Saints in 1989.
The Chicago Bears signed two holdout starters, tackle Keith Van Horne and running back Brad Muster, to two-year contracts.
Coach Mike Ditka last week criticized Van Horne and his agent for increasing their original asking price after tackle Jimbo Covert sustained a career-threatening injury.
