Chemical Spill Forces Closure of Freeway Ramp
About 700 gallons of a cleaning chemical spilled from a holding tank in a Santa Monica manufacturing company, forcing temporary closure of a freeway off-ramp, police said Monday. There were no injuries in the incident at 1639 9th St., said Santa Monica Police Sgt. Frank Fabrega.
“One of our patrol cars was flagged down by a security guard who said the cleaning chemical was spilling into the alley,” Fabrega said. “Fortunately, it went down a sewer drain and not into a storm drain. The storm drains empty into the ocean.”
Officials ordered the closure of the Lincoln Boulevard off-ramp from the westbound Santa Monica Freeway after the incident, Fabrega said. The ramps and roads were reopened three hours later.
