ORANGE COUNTY NOTES : Godshall Takes Lead in Race Across America
Loren Godshall of Los Altos took the lead in the Race Across America Monday night on the third day of the cross-country bicycle race.
Godshall reached Durango, Colo.--838 miles into the race--at 6:37 p.m. (PDT), 19 minutes ahead of defending champion Bob Fourney of Denver. Godshall is averaging 14.5 m.p.h. and 348 miles per day.
Rob Kish of Port Orange, Fla., who reached Durango at 7:11 p.m., was the only other rider who made it to the checkpoint by 9 p.m. Monday.
The 2,930-mile race, in its 10th year, started at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Irvine Holiday Inn.
The winner is expected to reach the finish line in Savannah, Ga., in about eight days after the start.
In the women’s race, Cathy Ellis of Cambridge, Mass., led Debbie Ann Breaud of Burleson, Tex., by more than an hour. Ellis reached Kayenta, Ariz.--652 miles into the race--at 4:46 p.m. Breaud arrived at 5:49 p.m. Susan France of Portland, Ore., was next at 6:54 p.m.
Aaron Boone of Villa Park had three hits and scored two runs in the United States’ 10-0 victory over the Netherlands at the World Youth Baseball Championships in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.
The U.S. team, which has won all four of its games in the 10-game competition, will play Nigeria today.
Manon Bollegraf returns to the Newport Beach Dukes’ lineup for their TeamTennis match against the Miami Breakers at 7 tonight at the John Wayne Tennis Club.
Bollegraf replaces Amy Fraizer, who played the past four matches while Bollegraf competed for the Netherlands in the Federation Cup.
The Dukes (4-5) have won two consecutive matches, including a 24-23 victory Saturday night over the L.A. Strings and Jimmy Connors. Miami is 3-6.
