Editor Anthony (Buck) Derry Dies
Anthony (Buck) Derry, a reporter and editor for the Herald American community newspapers in the Southeast area for 30 years, died Monday of complications from diabetes. He was 71 and resided in Long Beach.
Derry, who has been called “one of the deans of suburban journalism in Southern California,” began his career with the Los Angeles Daily News before joining the Herald American, then based in Compton, as a reporter.
The Louisville, Ky., native was editor of the Herald American’s editions in Lynwood, North Long Beach and Lakewood, and eventually became managing editor of the chain. He was editor of the Community Advocate, covering Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Artesia and La Palma, when he retired in 1984 because of a leg amputation.
His widow, Marie Derry, is a classified advertising account executive.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Cornelius Church, 5500 E. Wardlow Road, Long Beach.
