PLATFORM : Filling the Void
The Bar Assn. should be lauded for its progressive stance on assistance to illegal immigrants. Unfortunately, greedy immigration lawyers and consultants charging outrageous fees are familiar to those in the front lines who over the years have been providing free or low-cost legal services to the immigrant population.
With the far-reaching changes in our country’s immigration laws over the last five years, we have witnessed an impact on the lives of millions of previously undocumented immigrants. Unfortunately, many of these immigrants were unable to benefit from these laws because of the high fees charged by some legal providers.
There is a pressing need for all bar associations to emulate the action of the Los Angeles County Bar Assn. This would fill a void and provide an invaluable service to the immigrant community, thus constructively affecting the lives of future citizens.
