Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson skipped out on a $380 bar bill and was generally rude during the visit that led to rape accusations against him, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Tyson arrived in Indianapolis about 4:30 p.m. on July 17 to participate in Indiana Black Expo and Miss Black America festivities. He left unexpectedly at about 5:45 a.m. on July 19.

The night he arrived, Tyson drove with his bodyguard and singer Angie Boyd, known as B Angie B, to Sevilles nightclub, the newspaper said in its Thursday editions.

According to the Star, Mark Ritchey, who owns Sevilles, said Tyson was given a complimentary bottle of house champagne but said he wanted Dom Perignon, instead. Ritchey said he made arrangements to get three bottles, at $90 apiece.

Tyson danced with B Angie B and drank three or four bottles of beer before the group left about 12:30 a.m., the Star said.

“He just brushed out the door,” Ritchey said. “Our photographer tried to take his picture as he got in the limo,” but he yelled an obscenity and slammed the door.

No one in the Tyson party paid the $380 bill, Ritchey said.

“Brenda, our waitress, didn’t even get a tip, and she was worried we were going to make her pay for the Tyson bill,” he said.

Dennis Hayes, manager of The Sutherland entertainment hall and Tyson’s host, said Sevilles’ management had said that drinks were on the house.

Hayes also said that Tyson left the waitress a $100 bill as a tip.

Boyd’s personal manager confirmed that the singer is Tyson’s friend and that he has attended several of her performances.

On July 18, Hayes and the Rev. Charles Williams, president of Black Expo, took Tyson to a Miss Black America rehearsal. Tyson made a cameo appearance for a videotaped dance performance and exchanged phone numbers with some of the contestants.

“Some of the girls said he was a great guy, others said he was a little bit rude,” Sharmell Sullivan of Gary, the eventual pageant winner, said Wednesday.

Tyson and the Rev. Jesse Jackson helped cut the ribbon to open Black Expo that evening.

The 1990 Miss Black America said Tuesday that Tyson propositioned her and rubbed her buttocks during that ceremony. Rosie Jones, 27, of Bridgeport, Conn., said her boyfriend, Tyson’s bodyguards and several women witnessed the situation.

“He went to put his arm around my waist, where I thought it was going, but it went on my behind and he rubbed my behind,” she said.

J. Morris Anderson, who produces the annual pageant, said he could not support Jones’ claims.

“He put his arms around her waist and joked with her boyfriend, but we didn’t really take that as anything overly obnoxious,” Anderson said.

After the opening ceremony, Tyson, Jackson, Williams and others went to the Black Orchid Lounge for dinner. Williams said Tyson left the restaurant about 8 p.m. for a concert at the Hoosier Dome, where he hobnobbed backstage with performers, was cheered by the audience and was greeted by B Angie B. The show ended about 1:30 a.m.

An 18-year-old Miss Black America contestant has said that Tyson’s limo driver picked her up and drove her to the Canterbury Hotel after the concert. She has alleged that he raped her there.

Williams said he was awakened about 4 a.m. by Virginia Foster, owner of Solid Gold Limousine Service, who said Tyson was leaving. Foster declined to talk with reporters.

A special grand jury that will investigate the rape accusation is expected to be selected late next week. Tyson will be subpoenaed but is not required to testify, Marion County Prosecutor Jeffrey Modisett has said.

Police detectives plan to question Jackson as part of their investigation because the civil rights leader dined with Tyson a few hours before the woman alleges she was raped, the Star said.
