Klein Reaches Semifinals of Golf Event

Emilee Klein of Studio City will play in the semifinals of the 1991 U.S. girls’ junior golf championship today at Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kan., after posting two wins Thursday.

Klein, who won medalist honors during two stroke-play qualifying rounds earlier in the week, defeated Victoria Boysen of Fort Worth, 4 and 3, in the third round. She then beat Jennifer Bienn of Scottsdale, Ariz., 2-up.

Klein will face Alicia Allison of Santa Ana today in the semifinals. Allison defeated Vicky Strada of Cosmopolis, Wash., 5 and 4, in the third round before defeating Kristel Mourgue-D’Algue of France, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinals.

Also advancing to the semifinal round are JoJo Robertson of Roswell, N.M., and Kimberly Marshall of Bermuda.

Mike Bryan, 13, of Camarillo, advanced to the final of the boys’ age 14 division of the Texas Open tennis tournament in Austin.

Bryan, seeded fourth, upset third-seeded Cory Guy of Sacramento, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals. Bryan will face top-seeded Ryan Walters of San Jose in the final.

Mike’s twin brother, Bob, will play for fifth place against Ali Asari, the eighth-seeded and No. 2-ranked player in Texas in the same division.

The Bryans will also play in the doubles final against Mick Crowell of Dallas and Jeff Abrams of Newport Beach after defeating Rafael Jordan and Gilberto Rivera of Puerto Rico, 6-2, 6-3.

Dah-Jan Lin of Newbury Park defeated Victor Mercado, 6-0, 6-0 in the only boys’ age 18 match of the day to advance to the quarterfinals of the junior tennis championships in the Oxnard Sports Festival at the Oxnard Tennis Center.

In the girls’ 16 division, Sandi Burkhart of Somis beat Melissa Bailey of Ventura, 6-3, 6-0 and in the boys’ 16 division, Oxnard’s Rey Encarnacion beat Keith O’Doherty of Thousand Oaks, 6-2, 6-4.

In other tennis action involving local players, Leslie Balta of Oxnard defeated Jenny Askin of Westlake, 6-1, 6-0 in the girls’ 14 division; Erin Herrera of Oxnard defeated Sarah Distad of Camarillo, 6-2, 6-0 also in the girls’ 14; and Paul Cisarik of Oxnard defeated Orlando Reyes of Oxnard, 6-0, 6-0 in the boys’ 14.

Adam West, a left-handed pitcher from Thousand Oaks High and the Conejo American Legion baseball team, has signed a letter of intent with Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Ida.

West is 5-0 for Conejo, which opens play Saturday in the state Legion tournament. He has a 3.49 earned-run average and is batting .333 with team highs in home runs (six) and runs batted in (35).

West also reportedly considered Cal State Long Beach, Loyola Marymount, Washington State and Nevada Reno.

West will join Thousand Oaks catcher Brian Sturges and El Camino Real shortstop Gregg Sheren at Lewis-Clark.
