8 Bodies Found in Guatemala
GUATEMALA CITY — Investigators have discovered the remains of eight people during a search for victims of a crackdown on leftists a decade ago, newspapers reported.
Searchers, including forensic scientists from Argentina and Guatemala, found the remains Thursday just outside the city of Chichicastenango, about 40 miles northwest of the capital, the newspaper El Grafico said Friday.
The excavation was authorized in response to a motion by two human rights groups, the Mutual Aid Group and the Widows of Guatemala.
The groups claim that as many as 100 bodies may have been buried in secret graves in the region during the rule of Gen. Fernando Lucas Lopez Garcia, who led a crackdown on a leftist rebellion in Indian regions.
