Walt Bowman, executive director for Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Athletic Foundation, has resigned to become the athletic director at his alma mater, Gordon College in Wenham, Mass.

Bowman, who spent nine years (1980-89) as Chapman’s athletic director before taking the Fullerton job in April, 1989, will assume his new position with the Division III school after Sept. 1. Gordon fields 11 athletic teams.

“I have a chance to return something to my alma mater,” Bowman, 49, said in a release issued by the Fullerton athletic department. “I have spent a great 28 months here and it is with much regret that I leave.”

At Fullerton, Bowman oversaw all external affairs of the athletic department, including marketing, sports information and public relations. He also helped coordinate the school’s annual spring fund-raising drives. Fullerton received $505,000 in pledges during this year’s drive, surpassing its previous high of $453,000 in 1989.

Bowman is a 1964 graduate of Gordon College with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He earned a master’s degree in education from Michigan State in 1970 and a doctorate of curriculum and administration in 1975 from Michigan State.

Fullerton Athletic Director Bill Shumard, in his third full day on the job, said he hopes Bowman’s position is filled by mid-fall. He expects Bowman’s replacement to have a strong background in fund raising, marketing and corporate sponsorship.

“With a new stadium opening soon, we have some tremendous opportunities to generate revenue right around the corner,” Shumard said. “I’m looking for someone with vision and the ability to see these opportunities as we get ready to enter a new phase of Fullerton athletics.”
