Antelope Valley Lands 6-10 Center

Antelope Valley College men’s basketball Coach Newton Chelette has announced the signing of four players to letters of commitment, including 6-foot-10 Marlon Carter from Detroit.

Carter, who averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds at Henry Ford High, “can run the floor as well as most 6-5 and 6-6 guys,” according to Chelette.

Also signing with the Marauders was 6-8 Darren Jackson of Montgomery, Ala., who has completed a stint in the Navy; 6-7 Colin Lusby of Washington, D.C., whom Chelette says is a three-point threat; and 6-0 point guard Tracy Acqua of Rowland Heights.

The Marauders earlier announced the signings of five area players--Chris DeGlopper and Jason Grimes of Palmdale, Willie Montgomery of Antelope Valley, Lee Allen of Quartz Hill and Shawn Preasmyer of Paraclete.

Craig Clayton, an All-American baseball player at Cal State Northridge last spring, was called up to the San Bernardino Spirit, the Seattle Mariners’ top Class-A farm club. Clayton joined the Spirit, a California League team, in Reno on Tuesday.

Clayton was promoted from the club’s Class-A short-season team in Bellingham, Wash., after batting .262 with three home runs, 17 runs batted in and eight doubles in 35 games through July 27.

Chad Wright of Ventura and Jason Gore of Valencia each shot a 73 in the first round of the Ben Hogan Boys Junior golf championships at Four Seasons Resort and Club in Irving, Tex.

Wright trails leader Hank Kuehne of Dallas by five strokes in the boys’ 15-16 division, and Gore is five shots off the pace set by Patrick Vadden of Louisville, Ky., in the boys’ 15-18 division.

In the boys’ 13-14 division, Darren Angel of Northridge shot a 73 and is five strokes behind leader Jeff Fahrenbruch of Plano, Tex.

Kim Chandler has been named assistant women’s basketball coach at Cal State Northridge, Coach Janet Martin said.

Chandler, 25, was the assistant women’s basketball coach at Florida Southern College for the past two seasons.

Mike and Bob Bryan, 13, of Camarillo, advanced Tuesday to the doubles semifinals in the boys’ 14 National Tennis championship in San Antonio. The Bryans, seeded No. 1, defeated fifth-seeded Ryan Wolters of San Jose and Corey Guy of Portola Valley, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals Tuesday.

In addition, the brothers advanced to the round of 16 in singles. Mike, seeded No. 10, turned back Bjorn Kerr of South Carolina, 6-2, 6-2, and Bob, seeded 16th, defeated Alex Howard of Maryland, 6-0, 6-4.

Darren Potkey of Ventura and Reid Slattery of San Marino teamed up to win the 18-and-under doubles title at the Western Tennis Open at Ball State (Muncie, Ind.) last weekend.

Potkey and Slattery defeated Tad Berkowitz and Troy Mulert, 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, in the final.

The Sylmar All-Stars finished third in the National Invitational 10-and-under softball tournament at Lake View Complex in Santa Maria last weekend.

Annette Ramirez (.600 batting average), Raquel Castillo (.500) and Janette Garcia (.471) were Sylmar’s leading hitters.
