Monrovia : Report on Youth Program
An innovative program to bring summer recreation activities to youngsters in two troubled Monrovia neighborhoods has been a “major success story,” Community Services Director Eileen Brownell told the City Council on Tuesday.
The neighborhood recreation programs held on Montana Street and Monrovista Avenue have attracted more than 70 children from mostly minority, low-income communities, she said.
Brownell said the programs have exposed many of the children for the first time to the city library, swimming pool and canyon nature center.
The children are also being taught self-esteem and community pride, she said.
