Cerritos : Cafeteria Prices Hiked Up to 50% in ABC Schools
Students returning to school this fall in the ABC Unified School District will spend an extra 5 cents to 50 cents for some of their favorite food items in district cafeterias.
The school board voted unanimously Tuesday to raise prices on some items as much as 50% to offset a projected deficit in the 1991-92 cafeteria fund budget. This is the second consecutive year the board has voted to raise food prices in the district, which serves Artesia, Bellflower and Cerritos. Students from low-income families will remain eligible for subsidized meals.
Board members also approved a proposal to introduce a la carte items such as trail mix, gelatin desserts and pudding at district schools that do not already offer them. In addition, student organizations will now have to coordinate fund-raising food sales through the cafeteria, in order to allow the cafeteria to share the proceeds.
The price and menu changes will generate about $90,000 in revenue next year, permitting the cafeteria to operate in the black, officials said.
