World IN BRIEF : SOVIET UNION : Pilots Threaten to Go On Strike

The Soviet Union’s 57,000 commercial pilots announced plans to strike for three weeks beginning Saturday, officials said. They said that if the nation’s 12,000 air traffic controllers elect to join the work stoppage, the strike could go on indefinitely. The pilots’ union is demanding a tripling of wages and an increase in vacation time from 48 days to 72. They also want the job of pilot listed as a hazardous profession, which would entitle them to early retirement and additional benefits.
