Head of GM Sees Better Times: Sales of new cars and trucks should increase about 10% industrywide next year to 13.5 million or 14 million, General Motors Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Stempel said. Sales this year are expected to reach about 13 million. Through the first seven months of the year, domestic and imported auto makers sold about 7.1 million vehicles, 14.2% behind last year. Stempel told auto analysts that “an economic recovery alone won’t be sufficient to allow us to achieve our goals.” He said GM must restore profitability to its North American operations, continue its progress in Europe and carefully choose new markets.
