IRVINE : School Race Filing Deadline Extended
With Helen T. Cameron not seeking reelection to the Irvine Unified School District Board of Trustees, the deadline has been extended for residents interested in campaigning for three open seats to be filled Nov. 5.
Under state law, the filing deadline must be extended five days when an incumbent does not seek reelection. Candidates now have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file papers with the Orange County registrar of voters.
Cameron said that two terms on the school board were enough. Her children are no longer attending district schools, so it is time for other interested parents to serve on the board, she said.
“In the long term, it’s better to have people with children in school” on the board, Cameron said.
As of Thursday, five candidates had filed papers for the three open school board seats.
They are Thomas J. Burnham, 37, a human resources consultant running for office for the first time; William M. Dunkelberger, 38, a salesman who ran for the board unsuccessfully in 1989; Mary Ellen Hadley, 47, a two-term school board member; Michael B. Regele, 39, a board member appointed in 1990 to fill an open seat; and Annita A. Sharpe, 31, an advertising agency manager running for the first time.
