Muriel L. Ray; Teacher

Muriel L. Ray, a longtime teacher and a resource specialist who worked with special education students, has died at her Northridge home. She was 62.

Mrs. Ray died Tuesday of cancer, said her son Robert Ray of Bakersfield.

Born in Chicago Heights, Ill., she earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and came to California in the early 1950s. She received a teaching credential from Cal State Northridge in the mid-1960s and began teaching at Stonehurst Avenue School in Sun Valley in 1966. Mrs. Ray taught various grade levels and later became a resource specialist, assisting special education students diagnosed as having learning disabilities. She divided her time between Stonehurst and Brainard Avenue School in Lake View Terrace and continued working until the time of her death.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society.

In addition to her son Robert, Mrs. Ray is survived by her sons Richard Ray of Castaic and David Ray of Simi Valley; daughter, Kathleen McLaughlin of Poway, Calif.; sister, Judith Butler of San Diego; and five grandchildren.

A funeral, with burial to follow, is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of the Oaks at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen St., Chatsworth. Bastian & Perrott Mortuary in Northridge is handling the arrangements. Donations may be made in Mrs. Ray’s name to the American Cancer Society.
