Fernandez Pulls Out of L.A. Event

Mary Joe Fernandez has withdrawn from the $350,000 Virginia Slims of Los Angeles, tournament director Jerry Diamond said Thursday.

Fernandez would have been seeded fourth in the tournament, which begins Monday at the Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan Beach.

Fernandez is experiencing stomach problems and is currently undergoing tests, her manager, Ion Tiriac, said. Fernandez is expected to return to competition at the U.S. Open later this month.

Monica Seles will be the No. 1-seeded player in the 56-player field, with Gabriela Sabatini seeded second, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario seeded third and Zina Garrison seeded fourth.
