CHARGER UPDATE : Left Tackle Goeas Undergoes Arthroscopic Surgery on Knee

Leo Goeas, who has been projected as the Chargers’ starting left tackle, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday and will miss a week of work.

“It’s the second time,” Coach Dan Henning said. “Last year we had him suited up five days after undergoing surgery, but this time we’ll give him a week.”

Goeas injured his foot on the first day of training camp last season, returned and re-injured it again at the start of the season. He recovered, and while he suffered a knee problem later, he finished the season with nine starts in 15 games.

Plan B free agent Harry Swayne will replace Goeas until he recovers.

Henning said quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver will play the first half against the Rams in Monday night’s exhibition game in Anaheim.

Instead of splitting the third and fourth quarters between John Friesz and Bob Gagliano, Henning said he will give Friesz at least 20 plays in the second half.

“If that means that Bob doesn’t get in,” he said, “then Bob will get the shot the next week the same way unless due to circumstances or our evaluation changes.”

Henning said wide receiver Anthony Miller, who has been sidelined with a quadriceps pull, will play against the Rams.
