Judge Upholds Stay of Baby Bell Ruling: A federal judge refused to let the nation’s seven regional telephone companies immediately begin providing customers home shopping, stock market quotes and other electronic information. U.S. District Judge Harold Greene on July 25 reluctantly allowed the companies to provide the data but delayed the effect of his order pending appeals. The Baby Bells argued that they will be injured by further delay. But their primary business of local telecommunications “will remain a lucrative and protected monopoly with guaranteed profits,” said Greene, who refused to vacate the stay of his July 25 order.
