DRESHER AND ROTHENBURG: “Opposites Attract.” Paul Dresher, Ned Rothenburg, Anthony Jackson, Mark Dresser, Samm Bennett, Bobby Previte, Gene Refflin. New World 80411-2. Anchored by tape loops and samples from Dresher’s guitar and Rothenburg’s arsenal of wind instruments, these two launch a series of loud, tumultuous pieces loaded with African drumming and jazz, rock and funk improvisation. “Orient and Tropic” is the longest and most interesting of the 11 pieces, as Dresher and Rothenburg visit quiet oases of strange beauty alongside the thundering, post-industrial loops. This is a stylistic no-man’s-land, perhaps more suited for world-music fans than for the so-called classical, new-music audience.
