Film seized from a passenger and a photographer at a train wreck last month has been returned “out of the goodness of my heart,” a coroner said.

Kershaw County Coroner Thomas Horton confiscated the material after the July 31 derailment of an Amtrak passenger train. Seven people died and at least 87 were injured in the accident.

Horton has said he took the film because “you cannot make pictures of crime scenes.”

Passenger Jim Stenella Jr. of Warminster, Pa., said he got his videotape in the mail Thursday. Photographer Steve Bohnstedt of The Item of Sumter said he gave up his film after an officer threatened to jail him if he refused.
