NOTES : Capistrano Valley Team Wins Water Polo Title

Jeremy Braxton-Brown scored seven goals as Capistrano Valley won the boys’ 15-and-under U.S. water polo national championship Saturday with a 9-4 victory over Stanford in Orlando, Fla.

Braxton-Brown scored 42 goals in six tournament games, and was selected the most valuable player.

Orange County also won the 13-and-under title in Orlando. A team from Tustin defeated Corona del Mar, 12-3, in the title game.

Ian Ching had six goals and Bud Kunishima added four in the winning effort.

Chip Lyles hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead Orange County to the Continental Amateur Baseball Assn. 13-and-under World Series title with a 23-3 victory over Knoxville, Tenn., in McCook, Neb.

Orange County scored six runs in the first inning and added four each in the third and fourth innings to take a 14-3 lead.

Eric Chavez of Orange County was named the most valuable player.

The Orange County Batbusters advanced to the title game of the American Softball Assn. 16-and-under national championship in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Batbusters beat the Frost Cutlery Falcons, 6-0, and defeated the Texas Illusion, 5-1.

The Huntington Beach Outlaws lost twice Saturday and were eliminated.

Tiger Woods of Cypress shot a first-round 76 and is three shots off the lead in the Insurance Youth Golf Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Scott Johnson of Kenewick, Wash., leads with a one-over 73. Scott Gibson of Huntington Beach shot 78 and Chris Berry of Yorba Linda had an 80. The tournament concludes Tuesday.
