FOUNTAIN VALLEY : New Report Cards OKd for District

Parents with children attending schools in the Fountain Valley School District will be seeing a new and improved report card in the coming academic year.

School trustees last week approved the new report cards, marking the third revision that has been made in the past decade.

The changes were made in an effort to “align the way reporting is done to reflect changes in curriculum,” said Supt. Ruben E. Ingram. “And curriculum is always changing.”

Grades 1 through 5 will have a larger and more detailed report card. There will be a new heading that will indicate whether homework assignments have been completed and which grade level the student will be assigned to the following year.

Some terminology has been changed--”self-worth” will now be defined as “self-confidence,” and “unsatisfactory” has become “needs improvement.” In addition, the spelling grade will now be included in the language arts grade.

Middle school report cards will no longer have the instructional level designations of “above, at, or below” grade level. Instead, they will rely on letter grades alone to report how a student is progressing.

Teachers and principals at the district’s nine schools were involved in the changes, which took two years to complete.
