Judge Rules Against Apple Computer Inc.: U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker changed his mind and said Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co., targets of a copyright suit by Apple Computer Inc., could try to prove that parts of an Apple computer program were not original. Walker had ruled earlier that Apple’s overall pictorial window display for its Macintosh personal computer met the standard of originality that is required for copyright protection, and that the rival firms could not challenge the originality of individual pictures or symbols.
