NATION IN BRIEF : OREGON : Man Given Wrong Heart in Transplant
A man received the wrong heart during a transplant, University Hospital in Portland, Ore., admitted. Doctors hoped that his body would not reject the organ before another donor heart with his blood type can be found. The unidentified Oregon man with type O blood received a type A heart. Officials said eight other people worldwide are known to have received mismatched heart transplants. At least one survived after a second transplant. Technicians discovered the mix-up when they checked a tissue sample hours into the lengthy operation, said Dr. Donald Trunkey, chairman of the hospital’s surgery department. By then it was too late to stop. The heart was beating on its own, and the patient was in critical but stable condition.
