Workouts Start Today for Aztecs

Coach Al Luginbill received no major surprises Thursday on reporting day for veteran San Diego State football players.

The only no-show was Lawrence Calhoun, a redshirt freshman linebacker from Long Beach, who didn’t make it to camp because of car problems on his way to San Diego. Junior tight end Toby Weymiller, who missed last season after undergoing major knee surgery, left the program over the summer.

All but one player passed physical examinations. Tight end Alex Semenik, a junior transfer from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College, has mononucleosis and was not cleared to begin practicing.

Trainer Brian Barry said all players injured in spring drills--defensive end Ty Morrison (knee), offensive lineman Judd Rachow (knee) and defensive backs Steve Rudisill (knee) and Darrell Lewis (hamstring)--were healthy.

Luginbill will get a chance to see the players work out for the first time today, when the players undergo a series of physical conditioning tests.

“Looking at them physically, they’ve obviously worked in the off-season,” Luginbill said.

Shawn Smith, a junior transfer linebacker from Notre Dame who will not become eligible until 1992, left rookie practice early Thursday with exercise-induced increased heart rate. Barry said Smith will undergo tests today.
