PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Offensive Line a Concern for Robinson
Although help is on the way with tackle Gerald Perry and guard Duval Love due to return to action this week, Coach John Robinson admitted he was concerned about the play of his offensive line in the Rams’ 23-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks Saturday night at Anaheim Stadium.
“We played poorly,” Robinson said. “We have a lot of work to do. We’re obviously making a lot of changes. The only person that’s the same as last year’s team . . . that’s right tackle (Jackie Slater).”
Last year’s starting left tackle, Irv Pankey, is still unsigned and could be traded soon, last year’s starting right guard, Tom Newberry, is being worked in at center, 1990’s starting center, Doug Smith, is battling with Newberry, and last year’s starting left guard, Love, strained a ligament in his left knee at training camp.
The starting left tackle will either be Robert Cox or Perry, the left guard Bern Brostek, and the right guard either Joe Milinichik or Love.
Robinson said the team will cut some players today heading toward Tuesday’s NFL-mandated cut to 60. The Rams have 77 players on the roster. . . . The Rams have made no official decision on whether to keep, trade or release disgruntled defensive tackle Doug Reed, who started Saturday night’s game. Robinson wouldn’t comment on the situation, other than suggesting that the Rams haven’t decided whether Reed fits into their new defense.
