ROUNDUP : Hansel Has Torn Tendon, May Be Through for Year
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Hansel, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner, probably will not race again this year after incurring a small tear in his left fore tendon while losing to Corporate Report by a neck Saturday in the Travers at Saratoga.
Trainer Frank Brothers, who returned to Chicago early Sunday, added that the decision on Hansel goes beyond this year. “A decision about his career will be made shortly,” Brothers said.
Asked if the tendon damage could be repaired surgically, Brothers said, “It’s possible, but not probable.”
Fit to Scout took the lead in the stretch and never lost it, going on to a four-length victory in the $200,000, Grade I John A. Morris Handicap for fillies and mares at Saratoga.
Train Robbery, who raced coupled with A Wild Ride as the favored entry, was runner-up in the seven-horse field, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Her She Shawklit.
A Wild Ride and Toffeefee both failed to finish the race, each pulling up with nearly three furlongs to go.
Dr. Neil Cleary, an NYRA veterinarian, said both horses sustained right front ankle injuries and were placed in splints pending X-rays.
