NATION IN BRIEF : ALABAMA : Hunt’s Use of State Planes Is Questioned
Alabama Gov. Guy Hunt, a Baptist minister, traveled on state airplanes to out-of-state preaching engagements, renewing ethics questions raised in his reelection campaign last year. Hunt has been governor since 1987. Church members in Danville, Va., Memphis, Tenn., and Tifton, Ga., said Hunt was offered money to cover his expenses when he spoke at their Primitive Baptist congregations. In 1990, Democrats criticized Hunt, a Republican, for using state aircraft in his first term to fly to church appearances. Hunt cited a 1980 ethics opinion that said the governor can use state transportation to go anywhere.
