NFL : EXHIBITION ROUNDUP : Young Impressive as 49ers Defeat Chargers
Steve Young turned a scramble into a 47-yard touchdown run and threw for another score as the 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers, 24-13, in an exhibition game Monday night at San Francisco.
Young, starting a second game in place of Joe Montana, raced past linebacker Henry Rolling, broke Donald Frank’s tackle at about the five-yard line and carried cornerbacks Gill Byrd and Sam Seale into the end zone for the game’s first score midway through the opening quarter.
Montana missed most of practice in the week leading up to the game because of elbow tendinitis in his throwing arm. He last played in an Aug. 3 exhibition against Chicago at Berlin. He was held out of the team’s Aug. 7 exhibition against Denver because of the short turnaround between the games.
Young directed two other first-half touchdown drives to give the 49ers (4-0) a 21-3 halftime lead.
Overall, Young completed 18 of 25 passes for 227 yards and rushed twice for 60 yards.
The Chargers dropped to 1-2 in exhibition play. Their only touchdown followed a 49er turnover. Spencer Tillman’s fumble was recovered at the 49er 15 by linebacker Stephon Weatherspoon, and rookie Eric Bieniemy scored three plays later on a seven-yard run with 10:01 remaining.
Denver 21, Miami 13--Rookie running back Greg Lewis scored twice, and John Elway passed 62 yards to Ricky Nattiel for another touchdown as the Broncos broke out of an offensive slump at Denver.
The Broncos (2-2), who had scored only one touchdown in their first three exhibition games, showed signs of life on their first play, when Elway hit Mark Jackson on a 46-yard pass play.
