South Africa, in danger of losing its chance to compete in next year’s Olympic Games, launched a unity drive that may bring international stars to compete in the country by the end of the year. The bid to achieve unity among its bickering athletic organizations and secure South Africa’s place in the Barcelona Olympics came after the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the world ruling body of track and field, vetoed South Africa’s readmission at the world championships in Tokyo.
