BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Four Can Equal Team Futility Record
The Angels are on pace to have four players reach 100 strikeouts for the second time in club history. The candidates, followed by their totals before Monday’s game and projected totals: Lance Parrish (90/125), Dave Parker (82/113), Gary Gaetti (78/108) and Dave Winfield (77/107).
Parrish, with at least one strikeout in 24 of the past 25 games, is on a pace to surpass his career strikeout high of 120 in 1984--the year he hit a career-high 33 homers for the Detroit Tigers.
The only other time four Angels have had 100 strikeouts was in 1989: Devon White (129), Jack Howell (125), Chili Davis (109) and Parrish (104).
Commissioner Fay Vincent was in Seattle, meeting with Mariner owner Jeff Smulyan and city and county officials about the Mariners’ financial problems. Team officials say losses will approach $8 million this year.
Vincent’s came on the night that the club surpassed its season attendance record of 1,509,727, set last year.
Artificial surfaces have been good to the Angels this season, probably because of smaller parks more conducive to homers and the Angels’ excellent infield defense. The Angels are 15-5 on artificial turf and 43-55 on grass. . . . Floyd Bannister, pitching with Class-A Palm Springs to determine if he might take a turn as a starter with the Angels, gave up two earned runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-2 loss to Visalia in Palm Springs on Saturday. He walked two and struck out three. Bannister has 133 victories as a starter but joined the Angels as a reliever after rotator-cuff surgery and playing in Japan last season.
