La Verne : Agency in Search of a Name
The City Council considered renaming the city’s Parks and Human Services Department, but couldn’t agree on what to call it.
At the council’s Monday meeting, Bill Aguirre, director of the department, proposed the name Department of Community Services. Aguirre said that would be clearer than Parks and Human Services Department, which is often confused with the Human Resources Department. But still, he said, people would have to be taught the meaning of the new name.
Councilman Thomas R. Harvey said he would prefer to give the department a name people would understand without being re-educated. Councilman Craig H. Walters called the proposal a “bureaucratic name” that could mean anything.
“Everything we do is a community service,” he said. He suggested going back to Parks and Recreation Department.
The council took no action, but asked Aguirre to come up with a new alternative.
