University to Cut Another $1.8 Million From Budget
Cal State Long Beach will have to cut an additional $1.8 million from its already lean budget for the coming year, according to final budget figures released by the state.
According to the figures, CSULB’s share of the statewide $14.3-billion deficit will be $15 million instead of the $13.2 million projected earlier.
Valerie Cottingham, a campus spokeswoman, said the new figures will mean that the university’s various academic and support departments will have to cut their budgets by 8.5% to 11% rather than the 7% to 10% earlier projected. Among other things, she said, it will mean the layoff of 16 support staff members instead of the projected nine.
Other effects of the $15-million cut, she said, will include the layoff of about 60 lecturers who have been on two-year contracts for at least six years, a 20% increase in student fees, 10% reduction in the number of classes offered, and the elimination of cost-of-living allowances for faculty and staff members.
