Whittier : Cable Firm Must Upgrade Under Renewed Franchise
The Whittier City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved renewing its cable television franchise agreement with Sammons Communications Inc. on the condition that the company rebuild its cable system under strict construction deadlines.
If the Texas-based cable provider agrees, it also would have to upgrade from its current 36 channels to 60 channels in the next three years. The city could fine the company up to $250 per day for missing construction deadlines.
Under the council-approved contract, the cable company would have to complete 25% of the rebuilding in one year, and 50% within 18 months.
The city’s current 15-year contract with Sammons Communications expires Nov. 23. The company, which serves approximately 40% of Whittier residents, has been the target of persistent complaints by residents about poor service and picture quality.
