An AIDS-prevention video will be shown to high school students in the Ojai Unified School District this fall, the school board has decided.

“Letter From Brian” was approved unanimously by the school board at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The video and other materials were reviewed by the health/family life committee, composed of members of the clergy, parents, physicians, students, principals, teachers, an assistant school superintendent and area residents.

The video, produced and distributed by the American Red Cross to school districts throughout the United States, concerns a young woman who learns that a former sexual partner has AIDS.

While the video stresses abstinence as the only sure prevention of AIDS, it discusses other methods of protection.

One committee member objected to “Letter From Brian,” saying that only abstinence should be discussed with students. Speaking for the majority, committee member Karen McBride told the school board that while most of the committee agreed that abstinence is the ideal answer, it is unrealistic.

Assistant Supt. Pam Martens said parents have the right to review the video and other health materials.
