The Orange Police Assn. and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department are sending five youngsters to camp.

The three boys and two girls, ranging in age from 6 to 13, have been involved in the city’s summer recreation program but are unable to go to Camp Parker, Saturday through Tuesday without financial help, said Pam Strain, a city recreation supervisor.

The camp, held this summer for the first time, will be in the Barton Flats area of the San Bernardino Mountains, about 25 miles from Big Bear. The cost is $130 per child, and so far about 50 children are planning to attend, Strain said.

The name Camp Parker honors the late Police Chief Michael D. Parker, who died in March.

“He was very involved in the community in these activities, and that’s one reason the camp was named after him,” Strain said.
